Early Morning

  • Wake up. Wander.
  • Take your time.
  • Stop.
  • Ponder.
  • Saunter down the road a while.
  • Pause. Wait.
  • Then, navigate a new direction.
  • Never hesitate.
  • Marvel over

A Patch of Dirt, A Packet of Seeds…

Apr 2nd, 2009 by Dianne | 6

It’s National Poetry Month! Don’t forget to check out the wonderful poetry moments happening all over the kid lit blogging community, including new, never-before- published poems and interviews with many of the best children’s poets writing today.

30poets30daysYou can jump start your poetry mornings this month with Greg Pincus at Gotta Book and Tricia at The Miss Rumphius Effect.

If you’re game, as I was this week, you can springboard into your own poetry writing by trying out Tricia’s Monday Poetry Stretch.

Here’s my attempt at a list poem:

Your First Garden

A patch of dirt,
a packet of seeds.
One small spade
to dig stray weeds.

Tiny holes poked in the ground.
A sprinkle from a watering can you’ve found.
And plenty of sun.
You only need one.

Then,
watch,
and wait,
and finally, finally,
celebrate
your first garden.

Thanks for the link! And I love the list poem… though I’d note that in my family, you wait and wait and wait and then go buy some fully grown plants! Not as poetic….

Dianne! This poem makes me smile. I love this: “And plenty of sun. // You only need one.” The whole poem is playful and just plain LOVELY. I also like it especially because it shows that it’s not a complicated affair (as I have often thought) to grow something. My husband has a small garden — a “patch of dirt” — and it blesses our little back yard and family.
    Thanks for this poem.

Thanks, Stephanie! I am not much of a gardener myself, though once-upon-a-time when the kids were young, we had a nice sized vegetable garden. I admit to liking the “idea” of gardening more than I actually “practice” gardening, but it’s on the list of things to do – one of these days – when we have more time…
