Reading, Writing, and Play ALL Day

And I’m okay with a decent amount of math, too. But the bottom line is that the pendulum has swung TOO far and this op-ed article in Monday’s NYT sums up quite nicely the direction in which I *wish* education was headed.

What I wouldn’t give to teach in the (theoretical) third grade classroom described here.


All I can say is… I hope somebody with the power to make these kind of HUGE changes in the way curriculum is developed is listening.

    (Big sigh.) Will the people with power have enough courage to make these changes? It would mean putting a stop to the insane amount of standardized testing forced on our precious children.

    Wow, what a wonderful world, indeed. Two hours a day devoted to reading and telling stories and simply talking. Do families talk anymore, teaching their children how to converse and deal with others and appreciate the sound and meaning of mere words, along the way?
